Overview

Masjid Sultan (Mosque) in Singapore is considered one of the most important Mosques with a history of more than 170 years. It is located in Kampung Glam area in the vicinity of Arab Street. It can accomodate a congregation of more than 2000 worshipers. Sultan Hussain Shah of Johor is credited with building the Mosque from 1824 to 1826 which at that time was next to his palace. In 1924, the Mosque was rebuilt to accommodate a growing Muslim population. It was completed after four years in 1928. Masjid Sultan has stayed essentially unchanged since it was built, with only repairs carried out to the main hall in the 1960s and an annex added in 1993. It is now declared a national monument by the Singapore Government. There are many shops selling Islamic clothing as well as Islamic book shops near the Mosque. As for Halal restaurants, there are plenty of them all around the Mosque. As all masjids (masaajid) in Singapore, it has female prayer room facilities as well. It is indeed a must visit for when you visit Singapore.

Listing information comes from the CrescentRating mosque directory and may change — please check with the mosque, especially for Jumu’ah times, before your visit.
