Overview

The Monfort Bat Cave which is 245 ft. long is actually a bat sanctuary which is home to 2.3 million Geoffrey's Rousette Fruit bats. Located on Samal Island, this cave actually holds a Guinness World record for the world's largest bat colony and is a popular tourist attraction too. Maintained by the Inigo-Monfort family, the area has been enclosed to prevent bat hunting. Visiting the actual cave is not allowed since visitors would excite the bats, however, there are five entrances from where they can be observed. A tour would include some educational information about bats and only a limited amount of people are taken in at a time. Since bats are nocturnal animals, the best time to visit would be during sunset when you can see them waking up and flying out for food. You can even visit them after sunset to witness the circadian flight, but you will have to making an early booking first.

Prayer Facilities

There are no prayer facilities at the sanctuary, however outdoor spaces can be used for prayer or the San Jose Mosque can be visited. Muslim travellers to Samal Island will find Mosques near the island within Davao city that include the Piapi Mosque, the Davao City Islamic Centre, Buhangin Mosque and Masjed Al Nor.
