Farmer’s Market

Overview

A trip to the city of Funchal is truly incomplete without a visit to its wonderful Farmer's Market or Mercado dos Lavradores. Situated on three levels, this lively and colorful market allows tourists to experience what Funchal is all about. Visitors will come across an array of stalls selling a variety of beautiful flowers; including locally grown ones, mouth-watering, fresh fruit and vegetables and an array of freshly caught fish like tuna and scabbardfish. This major attraction also happens to be packed with locals and tourists alike, making it the ideal place to people watch. The Farmer's Market is best visited on Friday and Saturday mornings as this is when shoppers will be able to find the best and freshest produce.

Prayer Facilities

Finding prayer facilities at Funchal's Farmer's Market will not be possible. Muslim tourists will also not be able to find mosques or Islamic Centres in the city of Funchal. They will therefore have to locate a secluded place outdoors to offer their prayers, or they will have to return to their hotel rooms at prayer times.

Halal Food

The city of Funchal is not known to house any Halal restaurants. Muslim tourists will therefore have to dine on suitable seafood and vegetarian dishes at local non-Halal restaurants. If visitors have a way to cook in their hotel rooms, they should definitely buy some fresh fruits, vegetables and fish from the stalls at the market and prepare the items themselves.
