Overview
A trip to Thessaloniki is definitely incomplete without a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. Known to be one of the most important museums of Greece, the Archaeological Museum is not only housed in a building that is a unique example of modernist art in Greece, it also features a variety of archaeological relics from Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Most of the artifacts on display are from the city of Thessaloniki, while some are from the wider area of the region of Macedonia. Visitors to the museum will come across exhibitions on the culture of Macedonia, a variety of finds from important prehistoric settlements, artifacts from cemeteries, as well as what is said to be one of the largest and most diverse collections of ancient sculptures in Greece. While the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is ideal for history buffs, it is also great for those who aren't, as it is interesting and informative and can be toured in just about an hour.
Prayer Facilities
The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki does not have a prayer room for Muslim visitors. Muslims visiting the museum will therefore have to make use of the facilities offered at one of the few mosques in the city of Thessaloniki, such as the Hellenic-Arabic Center for Culture and Civilization, or the New Mosque.
Halal Food
The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki does have a café within its premises, known as Terra Antiqua. Although Muslim visitors will not find Halal certified dishes here, they are sure to find some suitable vegetarian and seafood dishes. Muslims visiting Thessaloniki may also be able to find some restaurants in the city serving Halal food, as there is a small Muslim population in Thessaloniki.
