Overview
A not to miss historical site when in China is the Fujian Tulou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering tourists a fascinating experience that provides them a glimpse into the traditional Chinese culture and gives them the opportunity to experience authentic rural life. While there are over thousand Tulous (earthen houses) in Southern China, only 46 of them are designated a World Heritage Site and are officially known as Fujian Tulou. This property consisting of 46 buildings was constructed between the 15th and 20th centuries, over an area of 120 kilometres. These earthen houses of the Hakka people, set amidst rice, tea and tobacco fields are several storey's high and are built with a circular or square floor plan to house up to 800 people each. Tulous are usually occupied by one large family clan with several generations, while some larger ones had more than one family. A day trip to visit these exquisite structures allows tourists to not only explore the impressive Tulous, but to experience the traditional Hakka culture. A must while here, is the native tea ceremony and a chance to taste the scented jasmine tea produced in the region.
Prayer Facilities
The Fujian Tulou does not provide prayer facilities for Muslim visitors. Muslim tourists may however be able to find a secluded area outside to offer their prayers if needed. The Fujian province is also known to house 4 mosques that are frequented by its locals and its visitors. Tourists could get their tour guides to make a stop at one of these mosques, and use the facilities provided, if necessary.
Halal Food
Muslim tourists will not find it easy to locate Halal cuisine while visiting the Fujian Tulou since there are no known Halal restaurants at this World Heritage Site. Muslims touring this site could bring along a Halal snack or inform the tour guide of their specific need for Halal food. Since the Fujian province has a few Halal restaurants located around the mosques in the province, Muslim tourists could visit one of these restaurants.
