Overview
One of the must-see attractions when in the city of Rabat is its medina, which is in the older part of the city. Before the French expanded the city, the small medina was all there was of Rabat. Rabat's rambling medina now houses a plethora of traditional shops and cafes and Andalusian style buildings, due to the original section of the medina being created when Muslim refugees from Spain's Andalusia region arrived and settled here. Souk es Sebbat and Rue Souka are the two best shopping streets found in the medina. Visitors will be able to find a wide variety of items here, like leather goods, Moroccan souvenirs and crafts, embroidered fabrics, Berber carpets, antiques, wooden items and more. They will also come across the Koubba Mosque, the Merinid Fountain, Grand Mosque and stalls selling mentha leaves which are used to make meantha tea; said to be the cheapest drink in Morocco. Rabat's bustling medina is definitely worth exploring for its stunning architecture and for the wonderful bargains tourists are sure to find.
Prayer Facilities
Muslims visiting Rabat's medina will definitely be able to find prayer facilities, as mentioned above; both Koubba Mosque and Grand Mosque are located here. Muslim tourists will also be able to find numerous other mosques located all over Rabat, such as Bader Mosque, Mosquée Moulay Mekki and Ahl Fas Mosque.
Halal Food
Visitors to the medina of Rabat will find a fantastic selection of cafés and restaurants to dine at. As it is a Muslim city, almost all of the food outlets found here will be Halal. Muslim tourists can therefore ask locals to direct them to the best Halal restaurants in the medina area when needed.
