York Castle Museum

Overview

A trip to York is not complete without a visit to the York Castle Museum, which is home to a collection that reflects everyday life in the county. Located on the site of the famous York Castle, the York Castle Museum was founded by Dr John Kirk. It is housed in former prison buildings built in the 18th century on the site of the castle. The museum has on display numerous historic objects and is known for recreating streets, rooms, shops and even prison cells. Visitors will come across a variety of displays and interactive galleries featuring thousands of historic objects like tools, household items, farming equipment, armour, toys, weapons, fashion and more. They will also find Jacobean and Georgian dining rooms, a 1850s Moorland cottage and a Victorian parlor amongst many other room settings.

Prayer Facilities

Muslims visiting the York Castle Museum will not be able to find prayer facilities within its premises. Because the city of York has a small Muslim population, Muslim visitors will be able to locate a couple of mosques in the city. The York Mosque & Islamic Centre and the York Muslim Association are both frequented by locals and tourists alike.

Halal Food

The Castle Café located at York Castle Museum offers a variety of delicious dishes and drinks. Muslim visitors will not be able to find Halal certified food here, but they will definitely be able to find some suitable vegetarian and seafood dishes on the menu. There are also a few Halal restaurants in the city, for those looking to dine on Halal certified food.
