Overview

The Shambles is one of the biggest tourist attractions in York and is the city's most famous shopping street. This old street is known for being a narrow street with overhanging timber-framed buildings which go back as far as the 14th century. It is also said to be one of the most picturesque streets in Britain. The Shambles has a long and interesting past, and was once known as "The Great Flesh Shambles", as it was a street of butchers' shops, stalls and houses. While the area is now home to a variety of cafés, restaurants, shops and boutiques, visitors can still see some of the original meat-hooks used by butchers attached to the shop fronts. This is also where visitors will find five of York's fascinating Snickelways. When in York, visitors must therefore make it a point to stroll down the street and explore the narrow road, the numerous shops and the surrounding area.

Prayer Facilities

Muslims visiting the Shambles will not be able to find prayer facilities. But, because the city of York has a small Muslim population, Muslim visitors will certainly be able to locate a few mosques in the city, such as the York Mosque & Islamic Centre and the York Muslim Association.

Halal Food

As mentioned above, the Shambles houses numerous great cafés and restaurants. While these establishments may not serve Halal certified food, they are sure to serve vegetarian and seafood dishes suitable for Muslims. Muslim visitors will also be able to locate a couple of Halal restaurants in the city of York.
