Overview

A trip to York is incomplete without a visit to the world famous JORVIK Viking Centre. It is known to be one of the most popular attractions in the United Kingdom, and welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Founded by the York Archaeological Trust, JORVIK Viking Centre is located on one of the most famous discoveries of modern archaeology, the Viking-Age city of Jorvik that was discovered during the 5-and-a-half-year-long excavation carried out on that site. This groundbreaking experience allows visitors to observe the houses, timber and objects uncovered; right under their feet, and recreates a Viking city, like they were 1000 years ago. Artefacts found in the original Viking city can be found at the centre, and visitors to the attraction will come across four exciting exhibitions and will also get a chance to come face to face with a Viking. The museum offers audio and video displays on Vikings and where they came from and life in Viking-Age York. From old-Norse speaking citizens, to houses, workshops and backyards and the smell of home-cooked stew, visitors get to experience it all.

Prayer Facilities

JORVIK Viking Centre does not have prayer facilities for Muslim visitors. But, due to its small population of Muslims, York does have a couple of mosques and Islamic Centers. The York Mosque & Islamic Centre and the York Muslim Association both offer prayer facilities and are frequented by locals and tourists.

Halal Food

It is unclear if JORVIK Viking Centre is home to a café or restaurant. Muslim tourists will however be able to find a few restaurants in the city of York that serve Halal cuisine. These restaurants may mostly be located in close vicinity to the mosques in the city. Muslims visiting the attraction can therefore ask staff to guide them to the nearest Halal restaurant when needed.
