Indian Museum

Overview

The Indian Museum, built in 1814 by Dr. Nathaniel Wallich and opened to the public in 1878, is the oldest and one of the most significant museums in India. It is also one of the oldest and largest museums in the world and is known for its Italian architectural style. Visitors to the museum will be transported back in time when witnessing the wonderful collection of exhibits. The museum is divided into six sections; displaying exhibits devoted to art, zoology, archeology, industry anthropology and geology. Those visiting the museum will come across over 60 galleries holding a plethora of antiques, fossils, paintings, mummies, skeletons, ornaments and more. This popular attraction also offers interactive computer screens making it a fun place to do some learning.

Prayer Facilities

While Muslims visiting the Indian Museum will not be able to find prayer facilities within its premises, the city of Kolkata is home to a large number of mosques. The city also houses the popular Tipu Sultan Mosque. Muslim tourists could ask museum staff to direct them to the closest prayer facility to the museum, when needed.

Halal Food

There are no known eateries inside the Indian Museum. Visitors will however be able to find a number of restaurants in the city of Kolkata that suit their tastes and budgets. Muslim tourists will not find it difficult to locate Halal restaurants and food stalls in the city, as there is quite a large number of Muslims in Kolkata.
