Overview
A must-visit attraction when in the city of Pune is the 18th century Shaniwar Wada; a majestic fort complex originally built as the residence of the Peshwa rulers. Shaniwar Wada lies in the heart of Pune city and consisted of several important buildings, five gates, and a beautiful lotus-shaped fountain. However, in 1828, the stately mansion was destroyed in a fire, and the surviving structures; including the massive walls of the fort and five gateways, have now become a popular tourist site. For those visiting Pune, a trip to Shaniwar Wada is definitely recommended as it is a great way to learn more about Maratha culture and Mughal and Maratha style architecture. There is also a sound and light show in the evenings.
Prayer Facilities
There are no known prayer facilities inside the Shaniwar Wada palace complex. As there are numerous mosques in Pune, and since the fort is located in the heart of the city, Muslim visitors will be able to easily locate a mosque. They could therefore ask the locals to direct them to a masjid or prayer room near the fort.
Halal Food
While Muslim tourists will not be able to find Halal food inside Shaniwar Wada, there are sure to be numerous Halal restaurants located outside the complex. Pune is known to be home to a plethora of Halal outlets which serve a range of cuisines. Muslim visitors will find high end Halal restaurants as well as street food carts serving Halal and vegetarian dishes.
