Overview

Mumbai's most recognized monument, the Gateway of India is the starting point for most tourists wanting to explore the city. Built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the city, the colossal structure with intricate latticework carved into yellow basalt stone is designed in the Mughal-gothic style of architecture. Today the Gateway of India is a popular hangout spot for locals and tourists alike, and has numerous vendors selling a variety of things ranging from balloons, photographs and famous snack items like bhelpuri, pani puri, kulfi and more. Tourists visiting Mumbai for the first time should not miss out on a visit to this popular arched structure. While here they will also be able to see the famous Taj Mahal Hotel in the background. An evening visit is highly recommended for striking views of a fully illuminated gateway.

Prayer Facilities

Muslim tourists may not be able find prayer facilities at the Gateway of India, they will however be able locate mosques nearby, as Mumbai is home to over 80 mosques that are spread across the city. Those visiting the popular monument could therefore ask the locals to direct them to a nearby mosque, when needed.

Halal Food

Halal restaurants are widely available in Mumbai; offering Muslim tourists numerous dining options when in the city. Mumbai is home to a range of restaurants, serving a diverse array of cuisines such as Italian, Chinese, Middle Eastern and more. While at the Gateway of India, visitors have the opportunity to sample some of the city's popular street food items mentioned above.
