Overview

Museo Capitolino - also known as the Capitoline Museums - are a series of art and archaeological museums located atop Rome's Capitoline Hill. The history of the museums date back to 1471 and has grown over the years to include a vast collection of ancient Roman artefacts, medieval art, inscriptions and various other items of interest. Three main buildings make up the Museo Capitolino - Palazzo Senatorio, Palazzo dei Conservatori and Palazzo Nuovo. The Palazzo Senatorio was built in the 12th century based on Michelangelo's designs while Palazzo dei Conservatori was built in the 16th century and houses mainly Roman, Greek and Egyptian sculptures. Palazzo Nuovo houses a collection of inscriptions, sarcophagi, mosaics and various other ancient Roman artefacts housed on two separate floors. A visit to Museo Capitolino is recommended for travellers sight-seeing in Rome - particularly for those with an interest in ancient history.
