Overview

Masjid al-Qiblatain is a must-visit mosque when in Medina, as it is a historically important mosque for Muslims due to the fact that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received revelation to change the direction of prayer (Qibla) from Jerusalem to Mecca. This mosque is unique as it had two prayer niches (mihrabs) until recently, and this is also why the mosque came to be known as Masjid al-Qiblatain (Mosque of the two Qiblas). The old prayer niche facing Jerusalem has since been removed. Those visiting Mecca on pilgrimage generally pay a visit to Medina as well, and visiting Masjid al-Qiblatain should be on every visitors list of places to see in Medina as it is not only historically significant due to the Qibla changing incident but it is also among the earliest mosques in the history of Islam.

Prayer Facilities

Muslims visiting the mosque will find plenty of space for prayer, as the mosque is able to accommodate over 2000 worshippers. The sub basement level houses the ablution area, while the prayer halls are at different levels. Although the mosque is an important part of Islamic history, praying at this mosque is not a requirement unless it is time for the daily prayers.

Halal Food

Tourists looking for Halal food in Medina will find it easy to locate restaurants serving a variety of Halal cuisine, as all restaurants and hotels in Medina are Muslim-friendly. Since they all serve Halal food, finding a place to dine when away from the hotel, will not be a problem. Visitors will not only be able to find restaurants serving local cuisine, but also a variety of western fast food chain outlets as well as restaurants offering a range of other cuisines.
