Overview

Being one of Sri Lanka's most prominent attractions, the Galle Fort is an extensively fortified Dutch fort located in the Bay of Galle, along the country's south west coast. The fort was first built by the Portuguese in 1588 and later it was fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century, with numerous administrative facilities and military features added. The fort was then captured by the British army in 1796 and remained under the control of the British until Sri Lanka achieved its independence in 1948. At present, the Galle Fort is a historical and archaeological monument in Sri Lanka and is South Asia's best preserved fortified city home to museums, cafes, souvenir stalls and fashion outlets. The fort was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its rich history and architecture and it is also being considered to become a modern wonder of the world.
