Overview
Aluthgama is separated from Bentota by just a bridge and is a lesser popular beach town in the area. The Aluthgama Market is a popular spot amongst locals living around the area for its numerous road-side shops and stalls selling various items ranging from vegetables to fruits to other local produce. The market is held every Monday down Mathugama Road and is flocked by large crowds of people on the lookout for bargains and offers. Travellers may have to be wary of 'commission' boys who may try to take advantage of unsuspecting tourists. The best time to visit it is during the morning, when food items are new and fresh. Aluthgama is also home to quite a large Muslim population and sufficient facilities for Muslim travellers will be available in the town.
