Established in 1877, the museum houses a wide variety of artefacts from a number of different eras of Sri Lankan history. The three main sections of the museum are the natural science section, cultural section and the library. The natural science section is further divided into entomology, zoology, botany and geology, showcasing a wide array of items ranging from insect specimens to prehistoric objects to collections of dried plants. The ethnology and anthropology sub-sections comprise the cultural section of the museum and offer over a million items on display - coins, pottery, musical instruments and other cultural objects.
