Overview

The Shanghai Museum is a prominent landmark and key attraction in the city. Located at the People's Square in the Huangpu District, the Shanghai Museum was originally constructed in 1952 and showcases China's 5000 years of history in the form of ancient Chinese art. The museum features eleven galleries and three exhibition halls containing a wide range of items such as bronze, calligraphy, ceramics, ancient coins, furniture, jades, paintings, seals, sculptures and art. Over 120,000 items are on display at the museum and the museum is considered by many to be the first world-class museum of China. The architecture of the museum itself is note-worthy for its round dome and square base appearance which is believed to symbolise the ancient Chinese belief of the world being a "round sky, square earth"

Designated prayer facilities at Shanghai Museum will be unavailable but it is possible to enquire for a private area that can be made use of during prayer times. Muslim travellers may also visit some of the mosques near Shanghai Museum such as the Pudong Mosque, Xiaotaoyuan Mosque, Fu You Lu Mosque, the Songjian Mosque, Hu Xi Mosque and West Shanghai Mosque which are all located within city limits.
