Melaka River

Overview

Considered to be the 'Venice of the East' by early European mariners, the Melaka River stretches across a distance of 10 kilometres and winds its way from Dutch Square, cutting across the town of Melaka. It is a popular tourist attraction, primarily for its river cruise which is offered to visitors daily. The cruise takes visitors down the river in a roofed cruise boat and offers a number of interesting sights along the way. Noteworthy attractions include a series of bridges including the Ghostbridge of Melaka, the Chan Boon Cheng Bridge, the Old Market Bridge, the Jalan Hang Tuah Bridge, as well as the Tan Boon Seng Bridge which has origins that date back to the 1500s during the capture of Melaka by the Portuguese.
