Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west. Rather, the righteous are those who believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Books, and the prophets; who give charity out of their cherished wealth to relatives, orphans, the poor, 'needy' travellers, those who asks, and for freeing captives; who establish prayer, pay Zakah, and keep the pledges they make; and who are patient in times of suffering, adversity, and in 'the heat of' battle. It is they who are true 'in faith', and it is they who are mindful 'of Allah'.

The Importance of the Surah Al-Baqarah Verse 177

This verse comes with a lot of values and knowledge that we can implement in our daily lives. Here are some of the values that we need to implement and acknowledge in our lives as Muslims from the verse:

  1. That we as Muslims must dedicate ourselves and be faithful to Allah fully and only Him, and there should be no doubt about it. This may be achieved if we are able to combine and base our faith on knowledge because if it is not based on the knowledge it will falter sooner or later, it is proven by the effort to carry out His orders, and is free from all shirk.
  2. Believed in the last day/doomsday as it is a consequence and a need to prepare provisions for life in the afterlife. Doing a sincere charity is one form of a safeguard for good deeds because the world is a place to prepare ourselves through good deeds so that we can harvest them in the afterlife.
  3. Believing in His Angels, means that we must believe that there is always an angel that always follows us wherever we go and record our doings. Therefore, we should also recite istighfar so that the recorded ugliness and minor sins can be erased.
  4. Faith in His Holy Books by believing, reading it, understanding, studying, memorizing, and teaching the Qur'an while also believing in the existence of the previous holy books/scripture.
  5. Believe in the Prophet. For Prophets before Prophet Muhammad, it is enough to know and believe in it as Allah has sent down the prophets as many as 300 or more with 25 Rasul. But to believe in Prophet Muhammad, we must always try to follow his sunnah and follow all of his behavior even though we have never seen him.

Other than believing in Allah and his greatness, this verse also taught us that in every treasure or money that we have and is precious to us, there are other people's rights/proportions in it. To whom does the proportion belong? Our treasure also belongs to close relatives, orphans, the poor, people that is on a journey, people who beg, and slaves.
