Experience royalty on wheels onboard the Palace on Wheels.
Considered as one of the most exotic trains not only in India but in Asia, this train takes you across some of the most elegant cities of Northern India. Palace on Wheels started its inaugural journey in 1982 and was refurbished and launched in 2009.
Itinerary: The train journeys for a week through the princely state of Rajasthan. The journey starts from Delhi, travels through Rajasthan, Agra, and then ends back in Delhi.
Day 1: The journey starts in the evening from the Safdarjung Railway Station in Delhi where visitors are given a traditional welcome before embarking on the train.
Day 2: The train chugs into Jaipur early in the morning and stops for sightseeing. The highlights of this stop include a visit to Hawa Mahal, Amer Fort and Jantar Mantar.
Day 3: The journey continues to Sawai Madhopur where you can stop to explore the Ranthambore National Park for quite some time. Continuing the journey, the train arrives in Chittorgarhlate in the afternoon of the same day where you can get out and discover the Chittorgarh Fort.
Day 4: Wake up to see yourself in another royal city, Udaipur. Here you can disembark the train and enjoy an exclusive sightseeing experience. The Lake Palace, Fateh Prakash Palace, Sahelio ki Bari and the City Palace are some of the sights that you will visit during your stopover in Udaipur. Breakfast is served on the train while lunch is extravagant at the Palace Hotel. Enjoy a boat ride and get back to the train which departs late in the afternoon.
Day 5: The train makes a long stop in the golden city of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer. Places for sightseeing in the city include Jaisalmer Fort, Nathmalji ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli and Patwon ki Haveli. Guests get to relish traditional local food and also a royal dinner.
Day 6: The train arrives in the ancient city of Jodhpur and has a halt of almost eight hours. Some of the places that you can see while in Jodhpur are Umaid Bhawan Palace, Mehrangarh Fort and Jaswant Thada. Lunch is arranged at one of the five-star hotels, and afternoon tea and dinner are served on the train.
Day 7: Early in the morning the train arrives in Bharatpur where you can see the Keoladeo National Park. The train continues its journey to Agra where it reaches late in the morning, allowing you to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal.
Day 8: The train arrives back in Delhi.
Cabins: The cabins on the Palace on Wheels have been lavishly decorated and include modern amenities. The train has 14 coaches and each of them have been named after a former Rajput state. Each coach has four cabins, with twin beds. Facilities on board include air-conditioning, intercoms, en-suite bathrooms, satellite TV, channel music and wall to wall carpeting. Attendants are always available at your service.
Dining: There are two restaurant cars in the train named, "The Maharaja" and "The Maharani." The dining cars serve an array of cuisines (not halal) such as Indian, Continental, Chinese and Rajasthani. Mineral water is available throughout the journey.
The train also provides indoor games and medical services. There is a lounge car where guests can relax and interact with each other.
