The Isla de Ometepe is a beautiful island in Lake Nicaragua. Formed by two volcanoes, Isla de Ometepe is the largest island in Lake Nicaragua and also the largest volcanic island in a fresh water lake in the world. The volcanoes of Concepcion and Maderas are joined by a small isthmus to give the island the shape of an hourglass.
There are no masjids or halal restaurants on Isla de Ometepe. However, there are quite a number of vegetarian restaurants where you can find local delicacies like rice and beans.
Hiking to the tip of Volcan Concepcion and Volcan Maderas are the must do activities. It takes about 8 hours to hike Volcan Concepcion and about 6 hours to hike Volcan Maderas. Both these hikes are strenuous hence it is important to note that only physically fit people should opt for these hikes. There is a beautiful waterfall on the southern side of the Maderas but the return hike can take quite some time. The trails along the hikes are not marked and it is good if you hire a local guide.
The waters surrounding the island are excellent to enjoy swimming, kayaking and fishing. You can easily rent a boat and explore the lake on your own. The white sandy beaches of the island are wonderful to relax and enjoy some quiet time. The waters of Lake Nicaragua have the world's only species of freshwater shark. The forests on the island offer lots of opportunities for people to observe monkeys, armadillo, opossum, anteaters, deer, bats, and the most robust insects, reptiles and amphibians. The reserves on the island include the Reserva Charco Verde.
The towns and villages have shops selling basic items. Accommodation is available on the island.
The best way to get around the island is to rent a motorbike or a car. Walk around the villages to observe the local lifestyle and see the island closely.
