As a Moroccan who originally is not from Fez but had the pleasure to reside in it, I have always been fascinated by the city's rich history and culture, since this city is well-known for the splendor it offers to its discoverers. Fez has always been an important Islamic Heritage City, par excellence.
Fez (or Fes according to locals) is home to some of the world's oldest and most beautiful mosques, madrasas, and universities.
So, when I heard about an Islamic heritage tour in Fez, I knew I had to experience it for myself.

We needed to walk for nearly 20 minutes in the beautiful alleys of Fez to reach the University of Al Quaraouiyine, yet though I am Moroccan but even for me the place felt exotic, with several merchants all over the place asking you to enter their shops in the most welcoming manners speaking a variety of languages so that you will grasp your language and answer, this fascinated me thoroughly.
Upon arriving at the University of Al Quaraouiyine, which was founded in the 8th century by a highly educated woman from a wealthy family, Fatima al-Fihri, I felt a sense of mysticism surrounding that place. The university is recognized as the oldest continuously operating university in the world. I cannot at all describe the exquisite feeling that dominated me when I entered that holy place. It feels like you want to stay over there for so long to heal your soul that is shattered beyond repair.
As I walked through the halls of the university, I was transported back in time to a world of Islamic scholarship and learning. I learned about the university's rich history and how it was a center of Islamic knowledge and culture for many years. Several well-known scholars from around the world, especially from the Middle East and Europe studied at this university. It has a remarkable history of mathematical and scientific achievements which for me was a distinguishable thing.

The tour then took us through the many prominent mosques and madrasas of Fez though the tour was a fatiguing experience, I was amused by it. Each building had its unique architecture and design, reflecting the artistic and cultural influences of its time period.
The intricate details of the buildings were simply breathtaking, and I couldn't help but marvel at the skill and creativity of the architects and craftsmen who built them. Every inch of those buildings was carved by hand super interestingly combining all the colors in the most harmonious manner. I was absolutely stunned by what I have seen of beauty and diversity, a palace that can never be compared to another on earth.

The highlight of the tour was the visit to the famous Al-Attarine Madrasa. This madrasa is known for its beautiful tilework and peaceful courtyard.
As I walked through the madrasa, I was amazed by the intricacy of the designs and the peaceful atmosphere of the courtyard. It was easy to see why this madrasa is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Just wonder how anyone who had the pleasure of studying at this place every single day would feel, a calming atmosphere that always allows the student to dive profoundly into their subconscious mind allowing them to study the hardest.

The tour ended with a visit to the historic tanneries of Fez. This was a fascinating experience, as I learned about the traditional leather-making process and the significance of the leather industry in Moroccan culture.
The tanneries were quite smelly. It was hard for me to enter, but I pushed myself regardless of the smell. However, it was amazing to see the craftsmen at work, using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations.

Overall, the Islamic heritage tour in Fez was a fascinating journey through the city's rich history and culture, but there is something that must be remembered if you are a woman and wants to visit Fez you should bring with you a scarf and dress appropriately so that to show your appreciation to this compelling cultural heritage.
As a Moroccan, I felt a deep connection to the Islamic heritage of Fez, and I was amazed by the beauty and complexity of the city's architecture and design.
If you're ever in Fez, I highly recommend taking this tour to learn more about the Islamic heritage of this incredible city.
After that visit and all of the things I have seen and encountered, I would just want to say that Fez is a city beyond description beyond analysis, filled with charm and grandeur. I paid several other visits to the old Medina of Fez discovering more of my heritage and cultural identity.
