Manners & Dua Series - Part 3 | Dua(s) When Faced With Sorrow, Grief, And Calamity

The huge challenges we are currently facing due to the virus are impacting us on many fronts; mentally, physically, financially.

While we take every effort to overcome them through all the means we can have access to, it is important that we plead with Allah (SWT) to help us overcome these challenges.

Here are some Dua(s) that Prophet (SAW) taught us to make when faced with difficult times.

Narrated Aisha (RA):

Allah's Messenger (SAW) said, "No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn.

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Umar bin Abu Salamah narrated from his mother, Umm Salamah (RA), that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

When a calamity strikes one of you, then let him say:

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ اللَّهُمَّ عِنْدَكَ احْتَسَبْتُ مُصِيبَتِي فَأْجُرْنِي فِيهَا وَأَبْدِلْنِي مِنْهَا خَيْرًا

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilaihi rāji`ūn, Allāhumma `indaka aḥtasabtu muṣībatī fa’jurnī fīhā wa abdilnī minhā khaira

(Truly, to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me for it and compensate me)

When the time of death was near, Abu Salamah, he said: "O Allah, replace me for my wife, with better than me.” So when he died, Umm Salamah said: “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. I seek reward with Allah for my affliction, so reward me for it."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi)

Narrated Ibn `Abbas (RA):

Allah's Messenger (SAW) used to say at the time of difficulty,

La ilaha il-lallah Al-Azimul-Halim. La-ilaha illallah Rabul- Arsh-al-Azim, La ilaha-il-lallah Rabus-Samawati wa Rab-ul-Arshi-l- Karim

(None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, the Majestic, the Most Forbearing. None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, the Lord of the Tremendous Throne. None has the right to be worshiped but Allah, the Lord of the Heavens and the Lord of the Honorable Throne.)

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Narrated Anas bin Malik (RA):

“Whenever a matter would distress him, the Prophet (SAW) would say:

يَا حَىُّ يَا قَيُّومُ بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ

Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm, bi-raḥmatika astaghīth

(O Living, O Self-Sustaining Sustainer! In Your Mercy do I seek relief)

And with this chain, that he said: “The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: ‘Be constant with:

يَا ذَا الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ

Yā Dhal-Jalāli wal-Ikrām

(O Possessor of Majesty and Honor)

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi)

Narrated Anas bin Malik (RA):

The Prophet (SAW) used to say

O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men.

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA):

When a matter would worry the Prophet (SAW), he would raise his head up toward the sky and say:

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ

Subḥān Allāhil-`Aẓīm

(Glory is to Allah, the Magnificent)

And when he would strive in supplication; he would say:

يَا حَىُّ يَا قَيُّومُ

Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm

(O the Living, O Sustainer)

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi)

In these difficult times, let's make these Dua(s) consistently with humility.
