Sri Lanka has a long-standing history as the pearl of the Indian Ocean. With pristine beaches, lush forest, diverse wildlife, picturesque waterfalls and tropical foods, the island is the ideal tourist spot. HalalTrip currently offers a Halal-friendly package taking you through the must-see destinations of Sri Lanka; Pinnawala, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Colombo.
Pinnawala - Well known for hosting the world’s largest collection of captive elephants, the Pinnawala elephant orphanage is among the most popular tourist attractions of the country. Watch elephants, from newborns to elders, socialize and play as they bathe, and get a chance to bottle feed orphaned baby elephants.
Kandy - The city of Kandy itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by mountains known as Kanda Uda Rata, or hill country. There’s an exciting range of things to see and do, from the scenic views at the Kandy Lake, catching a match at the Pallekele Cricket Stadium, visiting the Royal Palace, or shopping at the many speciality and gift shops where you can explore the gems, jewelry, batiks, silks, handicrafts and much more. Visit the Royal Botanic Gardens of Sri Lanka in Peradeniya, for over 4,000 species of flora. Don’t miss the Giant Bamboo of Burma, the hundred-year-old Javan fig tree, the Cannonball tree or the incredible Double Coconut Palm, which produces the largest known seeds. Don’t worry about making your prayers on time as you can always stop at the historic Meera Makkam Mosque, built in 1824.
Nuwara Eliya - En route to the ‘city of light’, witness the brewing of real ‘Ceylon tea’ at one of Sri Lanka’s many tea factories. Known for being the coolest area in Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya’s temperate climate is one of Sri Lanka’s many unique features. Visit the beautiful waterfalls, strawberry farms and botanical gardens. If you’re looking for something more adventurous, try rafting and go on the wildlife tours! Perform your prayers at the Al-Kabeer Grand Mosque and mix with the local community.
Colombo - In Sri Lanka’s largest city you’ll have no shortage of things to do. From shopping to visiting the Zoo, the city is full of exciting opportunities. There are several mosques to visit, such as the Davatagaha Mosque at Town Hall and the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque at Pettah. Built in 1909, some say that the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque was once used by sailors approaching the port city as a key landmark. Finding Halal Food will not be a problem due to the city’s sizeable Muslim population, making the country a great destination for a Halal-friendly holiday.
