Bentota is one of the most popular beach destinations in Sri Lanka. The city is located within easy reach of Colombo and Galle and is a favourite destination for adventure lovers. Bentota boasts of wide sandy beaches that impress travellers at first sight. The waters around the Bentota beach are excellent for swimming, diving and surfing. The Bentota beach is segregated into two parts, one around the Bentota Lagoon and the other around Paradise Island.
The Bentota Lagoon is where visitors can enjoy a variety of water-sports like wind-surfing, canoeing, water-skiing, deep-sea fishing and banana-boating. Another attraction in Bentota is the Bentota Ganga River. Visitors can take boat tours up the river and get a chance to observe the exotic flora and fauna along the length of the river. Herons, crocodiles and other fauna typical of wetland habitat can be spotted easily. There is a turtle hatchery on the Induruwa beach, which is open for visitors. There are numerous luxurious resorts and hotels around Bentota that meet the needs of a Muslim visitor.
Bentota does not disappoint avid shoppers. There are several local markets around the town and also a few supermarkets where one can find items of requirement. The area is known for its jewellery and handicraft items.
The closest domestic airport to Bentota is the Bentota River Airport. The airport is served by the domestic carrier Sri Lankan AirTaxi.
The nearest international airport is the Bandaranayake International Airport. Buses are available from the airport to Colombo Fort and from the Colombo Fort visitors can take any air-conditioned bus to Galle. These buses make a stop at Bentota. The journey takes about 2-2.5 hours and costs around Rs 150 for a one-way trip. Travellers can also take taxis to reach Bentota, however taxis can be expensive.
Finding halal food in Bentota can be a bit difficult. There are a few resorts like AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa and the Bentota Beach Hotel, which informed prior to the visit, can make arrangements for halal food. In the area of Aluthgama, around the bridge there are a few Muslim restaurants where visitors can find local halal food. Alternatively visitors can find a variety of options in the nearby city of Beruwala.
There are no mosques in Bentota, however the nearest mosque can be found in the neighbouring city of Beruwala, the Kechimalai Mosque. The city of Beruwala has a good population of Muslims and finding halal facilities around the area can be easy.
