Hikkaduwa is a popular beach resort located about 98 Km from Colombo. It is located on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. The beach ambience of Hikkaduwa gives visitors a wonderful laidback atmosphere. This town is best known for surfing and diving. There are four basic break points along the Hikkaduwa beach. These break points are the Locals Break, the Main Peak, the Hansa Surf Break and the Beach Break. About half an hour from the Hikkaduwa beach are clear waters that are excellent for diving.
A little further from the main beach resort of Hikkaduwa is the Hikkaduwa Bird Lake where visitors can get to see natural beauty and different types of flora and fauna. The area is especially famous for playing host to different varieties of birds. The Coral Sanctuary is also a recommended destination for visitors. People can hire glass-bottomed boats and travel over the reefs to experience the beauty of naturally occurring coral reefs. There is an exotic Turtle Farm located within easy reach of Hikkaduwa.
There are several souvenir shops around the Hikkaduwa beach and along the main road. At these souvenir shops visitors can buy antique and traditional jewellery. There are also kiosks selling corals, precious stones, batik cloths and other items.
The closest domestic airport to Hikkaduwa is the Koggala Airport. It is about 30 Km from the resort town. From the Koggala Airport visitors can take taxis or local transport to reach Hikkaduwa.
The closest international airport is the Bandaranaike International Airport about 118 Km away. From the Bandaranaike International Airport visitors can take buses to Colombo and then from Colombo buses and taxis are available to Hikkaduwa. There is also a rail service available from Colombo to Hikkaduwa.
There are a few halal restaurants around Hikkaduwa especially along the Hikkaduwa-Galle Road. The ChaayaTranzHikkaduwa can arrange for halal food. However visitors should inform the hotel staff three days in advance.
