Bukittinggi is a small haven in the province of West Sumatra, Indonesia. Although this town is not a famous tourist attraction, its magnificent landscapes and brilliant historical sites make Bukittinggi worth a visit nonetheless.

Jam Gadang or “Grand Clock” which is located in the middle of the town square is the landmark of Bukittinggi. It was built in 1926 and it was a gift from the Queen of the Netherlands. The clock itself was imported directly from Rotterdam. Another heritage from the colonial era is the Fort de Kock which was built in 1825. From there, visitors can witness the beautiful panorama of the city as well as various species of birds within its conservation not far from the fort. 

Bukittinggi is very rich in local Minangkabau culture. It is written in the streets, and local daily lives, but mostly it is prominent in its architecture. The Rumah Gadang Baanjuang is the perfect representation of traditional Minangkabau houses iconic for their curved thatched roof as well as wooden walls and floors. This site is made to be a museum that portrays priceless West Sumatran artifacts. 

As a city known for its local cuisine, plenty of local foods are sold in stores that are spread all over Bukittinggi. The Toko Christine Hakim is the largest franchise with a variety of Padang’s delicacies. Other stores are available as well, such as Ummi Aufa Hakim, Sentral Pasar Raya Padang, and many stalls at the city square where Jam Gadang resides!

Nearby Airports

The Minangkabau International Airport is the airport serving West Sumatra and the Palapa regions. It is approximately 75 kilometers from Bukttinggi, so travel by taxi will be too expensive though taxis are available from the airport. Visitors can opt for buses from Padang to Bukittinggi that will cost Rp 20,000 per passenger.

Halal Restaurants

Bukittinggi is dominated by Muslims. Halal cuisine is not a problem for visitors. Sate Mak Aciak, Nasi Kapau Uni Lis, Rumah Makan Sianok, and Cafe and Resto Rumah Pohon Abdul are a few of the many great restaurants in Bukittinggi!

Mosques

Plenty of mosques are available all over the city. The prominent ones are Masjid Raya Bukittinggi, Masjid Jami’ Taluak Bukittinggi, Masjid Tablighiyah Garegeh, and Masjid Jami’ Mandiangin.
