Chwaka is a coastal town on Tanzania’s Zanzibar Island and is a fairly popular tourist destination in the country. It is located on the edge of the Chwaka Bay and is famed for being in relatively close proximity to the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park which is one of the main attractions in the area. The area has several accommodation options, and for Muslim travelers, Halal food and prayer facilities may not be available in abundance as some of the larger cities in the country, however sufficient facilities will be available to ensure a comfortable visit to Chwaka.
Attractions in the area include Chwaka Bay - a large bay home to several islands as well as coastal towns such as Chwaka and Kae. Other attractions in relative close proximity to Chwaka include Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park in Chwaka and Uroa Beach located about 7 kilometres away.
The Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the only national park in Zanzibar and covers an area of over 50 square kilometres. Established in 2004, it is home to an abundance of flora and fauna species and is a must-visit spot for any nature enthusiast.
Zanzibar International Airport is the main airport serving Chwaka and is located about 20 kilometres away. Also known as the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and the Kisauni Airport, it offers the services of two terminals. It is a prominent airport in Tanzania and serves many airlines and hundreds of thousands of passengers every year.
Though prominent Halal restaurants in Chwaka are not known, Halal food will be available in the area due to the sizable resident Muslim population. It is also possible to opt for sea food options and vegetarian cuisine at the local restaurants in Chwaka but it is best that travellers enquire about how food is prepared prior to dining.
There are no known prominent mosques in Chwaka but finding prayer facilities for Muslim travellers will not be difficult due to the fairly large Muslim population in the area. Locals will be able to direct you to the nearest prayer facility or it is also possible to enquire for a private space in the vicinity to make use of prayer times.
