Located in India, on the western coast of the state of Goa is the best known beach town in India – Calangute. The beautiful town is visited by thousands of tourists from India as well as by those from International countries. Home to some of the best beaches in the country, Calangute is the perfect destination for those looking for some relaxation, as well as for those seeking adventure and excitement. There are numerous attractions which will interest the entire family, making this the ideal spot for a fun family get away. Muslim visitors must be aware that finding Muslim-friendly facilities in Calangute will not be easy. Muslims will not be able to locate any mosques in Calangute, while trying to find Halal restaurant in Calangute will also prove to be difficult.
Tourists cannot go to Calangute and not visit Calangute Beach. This beach is said to be one of the most popular and busiest beaches in India and is the largest in north Goa. Known as the Queen of Beaches; Calangute Beach is visited by Indian and International tourists due to its beautiful golden sand and for the numerous activities offered here. In addition to swimming and sunbathing, while here, tourists can go snorkeling, parasailing, water skiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, sailing and more. Tourists may also spot some dolphins while here, if lucky. The sun beds that line the sand are perfect for those looking to catch some sun. Calangute Beach also has quite a tame nightlife; which Muslims will prefer to avoid, in comparison to some of the other beaches in the area.
The Main Street located at the entrance of Calangute Beach is also worth a bit of exploring. It is a shopper’s delight. Here tourists will be able to find a variety of products ranging from handicrafts and local items to souvenirs, traditional wear, Indian and International food, antiques and so much more.
Located about two kilometers from Calangute Beach is Baga Beach. For Muslim visitors this beach is definitely a must-visit as it is a lot quieter and more isolated when compared to Calangute Beach. Baga beach is also one of the most popular beaches in Goa.
Another must-visit when in Calangute is the Mottant Medicinal Springs. The stream here is believed to have medicinal and curative properties. Here, visitors will find areas which are perfect for picnics. They must also be prepared for a little dip in the medicinal water.
For art enthusiasts, the Kerkar Art Gallery will be worthy of a visit. Said to be one of the most popular art galleries in the area, the Kerkar Art Gallery is home to paintings, sculptures and other art installations done by up and coming Goan artist - Subodh Kerkar. Visitors will also come across art displays done by other distinguished Goan artists.
The closest airport to Calangute is Dabolim Airport, which is also known as the Goa International Airport. Located in Dabolim, Goa about 10.5 kilometres from Calangute; this airport has international flights. Tourists can get to Calangute via bus or taxi.
There are no known Halal restaurants in Calangute. The town is however home to numerous restaurants which serve sea food dishes, as well as vegetarian ones. Muslim tourists must make sure these dishes do not contain any non-Halal items before dining. There are numerous shacks which line the beaches at which tourists will be able to find a variety of fresh and delicious seafood dishes. Tourists must also try out some traditional Goan cuisine if possible. They can also ask the locals for restaurants that serve Halal food in the surrounding towns and cities.
There are no known masjids in Calangute. There are however a few mosques in areas surrounding the town. It is best for Muslim tourists to ask the locals for other prayer facilities in Calangute or the location of the nearest mosque. It is also recommended that Muslim visitors offer their prayers in the hotel room, when possible.
