Pondicherry, also known as Pondi, officially called Puducherry, is a fascinating small town and the capital of the Pondicherry union territory of southern India. Although small, this charming town was once the largest French colony in India and has still retained the French influence in the layout of the city. Much of its French inspired architecture is still present, especially in the French quarter where many of the visitors may feel like they are in France. French is also still widely spoken and understood in the city of Pondicherry. The city is a mix of east and west and is called the French Riviera of the east.
