Matemwe is a popular tourist destination in Tanzania and visit to Matemwe is recommended for travellers in the country – for beach lovers in particular. Attractions will also be located in close vicinity to the village and travellers also have the option of exploring some of the other nearby villages in the area which are not located too far away. Facilities for Muslim travellers such as Halal food and prayer facilities may be somewhat limited in comparison to the facilities available at some of the bigger cities, but due to the sizable Muslim community in the area, Muslim travellers will not face much of a difficulty during a visit.
The little village of Matemwe is located along the northeastern coast of Zanzibar Island and can be found between the villages of Mwangaseni and Kigomani. It is famed for its beautiful beaches and is a popular destination amongst tourists who frequent the village to experience the distinct beach atmosphere of Matemwe.
Seaweed farming and fishing are common in Matemwe and travellers to the village will also be able to join the locals in their daily activities. The lagoon and coral reef of Matemwe are also popular sights, with snorkeling and scuba diving being popular activities of visitors. Plenty of marine life can be observed including a wide variety of fish such as groupers, giant trevallies, anthiases, trumpetfishes and snappers.

The main airport serving Matemwe is the Zanzibar International Airport – also known as the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. It is located about 40 kilometres away from the village and is one of the country’s busiest and most prominent airports, serving numerous airlines and passengers throughout the year.
Though there are no known prominent Halal restaurants in Matemwe, due to the sizable Muslim community living in the area, there will be a few spots in the village where travellers can access Halal food. The locals will be able to direct you to the nearest Halal food spot. In addition to the plenty of seafood options that are available throughout the village, Muslim travellers may also opt for vegetarian cuisine at some of the local restaurants.
There are no known major mosques in Matemwe but locals will be able to direct Muslim travellers to the nearest prayer facility in the village. During instances when prayer facilities are unavailable, it is best for Muslim travellers to make use of the privacy of their accommodation or simply enquire for a private space that can be used during prayer times when travelling outdoors.
