Corfu Town is the main town located on the Corfu Island which is a part of the Ionian Islands in Greece. The city is a major attraction in Corfu and has been an important city since the 8th century. Corfu Town is also known as Kastropolis or the Castle City as it is home to two castles. The Old Town of Corfu is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There are a number of historic attractions across Corfu excellent to visit. Corfu has had a glorious past in the field of fine arts and this can be witnessed at the Museum of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu.
The Esplanade is a huge park and parade ground located west of the Old Fortress or the Paleo Frourio. The Paleo Frourio was built by the Venetians during the mid-16th century and is separated from the town by a deep moat. The Palace of St. Michael and St. George also known as the Palaia Anaktora is an exquisite palace from the 19th century. There are some good museums in the Corfu Town, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Palaeopolis and the Museum of Asian Art.
When it comes to shopping the Corfu Town does not disappoint its visitors. The Corfu Town is the main center for shopping on the island. The town hosts a market every morning excepting on Sundays. Visitors can find some excellent deals and bargains. Homemade olive oil and honey make some good buys in the city.
Corfu Town is served by the Corfu "Ioannis Kapodistrias" Airport. From the Corfu Airport visitors can take taxis, private shuttles or shared shuttle to reach the city. Taxis usually charge around 17 Euros for a ride from the airport to the city center. Visitors can book shared shuttles online and it costs around 16 GBP per person.
