Rijeka is the third largest city on the country - behind the capital city Zagreb and the second-largest city Split - and is located on the Kvarner Gulf - a bay in the northern Adriatic Sea. It is also the principal seaport of Croatia and is home to a fairly large population of over 200,000 residents.

Majority of the population comprise Croats, but the city is also home to significant numbers of Serbs, Bosniaks and Italians as well as a few Slovenians, Albanians, Roma, Montenegrins, Macedonians and Hungarians. Most of the population resides in the western part of the town.

Rijeka also offers a number of attractions to travellers. Some of the most prominent sights include the Torpedo factory - also known as Tvornica "Torpedo" - which is believed to be the first torpedo factory in the world. Other sites are the Old gate or Roman arch as well as numerous other ancient buildings and churches that date centuries back in time.

Rijeka Airport - also known as Zračna luka Rijeka in Croatian - is located a few kilometres away from the Rijeka  railway station. It is a fairly busy airport during the months of summer and mainly serves European low-cost airlines. The major airport closest to Rijeka is the Pula Airport, which is located about 100 kilometres away from the Rijeka city centre.
