The island of Korčula - also known as Curzola - is located in the county of Dubrovnik-Neretva, in the Adriatic Sea. The island spans across an area of over 250 square kilometres - measuring up to 50 kilometres in length and 8 kilometres in width - and is home to a population of over 16,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most populated islands in Croatia.

The history of the island dates back to the 12th century BC when according to legends, it was founded by Antenor - one of the wisest of the Trojan elders and counselors in Greek mythology. Certain sources also claim Korčula to have been the birthplace of Marco Polo - the legendary Italian merchant traveller.

Due to its rich history and culture, Korčula will have a lot to offer travellers. The most prominent attractions in Korčula include the Korčula Old City - a historic fortress town on the Damaltian coast, the house of Marco Polo and the Korcula Town Museum, which is also a landmark of the city. Travellers may also get the chance to witness a historical war dance performance - Moreska Sword Dance - during their stay on the island.

Nearby Airports

Travellers have the option of flying to either the Dubrovnik Airport - which is located 138 kilometres away from Korčula - or to the Split Airport - which is located about 170 kilometres away from Korčula. Those who arrive at the Dubrovnik Airport will have to then reach Orebić and take a ferry ride to Korčula. Travellers arriving at the Split Airport will have to drive to Drvenik along the coastal road and then take a ferry ride to Korčula.

Halal Restaurants

Access to Halal food at Korčula will be limited since there are no known Halal restaurants on the island. However, some of the local restaurants may serve vegetarian or seafood cuisine. But it is recommended that you enquire about how food is prepared prior to dining, in order to make sure that non-Halal food items are not used. 

Mosques

There are no known mosques in Korčula, therefore access to prayer facilities will be limited on the island. The best option for Muslim travellers is to use the privacy of their room or accommodation option during prayer times or enquire for a private area when travelling outdoors.
