Located on the shores of the Adriatic Sea in the historical region of Dalmatia, Split is the second largest city of Croatia after the capital city Zagreb and is also the largest city in Dalmatia. It stretches across a central peninsula and is centred on the ancient Roman Diocletian's Palace. It covers an area of nearly 80 square kilometres and is home to a population of over 150,000 residents.
Split is believed to be over 1,700 years old, making it one of the oldest cities in the area and its rich history and past are one of the main appeals that draw in tourists and travellers from around the world. Roman walls, squares and temples can be still witnessed in the city, with the city's historic centre being amongst its main attractions.
Split's fantastic and sunny climate has earned it several titles including the "Mediterranean flower" and "The most beautiful city in the world." Though travelling in the city is possible all year through, perhaps the best time to visit the Dalmatian Coast would be during the months of May to late September.
Split Airport - also referred to as the Resnik Airport - is the main airport serving the city of Split and is located about 20 kilometers away from the city center. It is the second-busiest airport in the country, next to Zagreb Airport, and serves numerous airlines and millions of passengers throughout the year. The airport can be reached either by bus, taxi, car rentals, or taxi boat services.
A few Halal restaurants in Split are available, catering to the small Muslim community of the city. It is also possible to opt for vegetarian cuisine at most of the restaurants in the city but it is advisable to enquire about how food is prepared prior to dining.
There are a few mosques in Split that can be visited by Muslim travelers during prayer times. The main mosque of Split is perhaps the Split Masjid, located at Cosmijeva 1, Split. It offers a number of facilities to Muslim travelers including separate prayer facilities for ladies, Quran lessons as well as refreshments.
