Granada is one of Spain’s largest urban cities. It is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is only one hour away from the Mediterranean coast. It is also in close proximity to the Sierra Nevada Ski Station. There is never a shortage of things to do in Granada.
With a large population of immigrants, mostly from South America, Granada also has very deep Islamic ties which are evident all throughout the city. In the area of Granada called the Albaicín, Islamic architecture can clearly be seen with the Moorish and Morisco construction. The Alhambra, a citadel and palace of the Moors, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is its garden area – the Generalife – whose romance drew the Granadan Muslim Kings to use it as their main resting place. The Alhambra and Generalife is one of Granada’s biggest tourist attractions. The various Spanish-Muslim art is considered to be Granada’s greatest artistic treasure.
Granada stretches across a total area of 88 square kilometres and is home to a population of over 200,000 residents. Due to its rich culture and heritage, it is arguably the most worthwhile destination for Muslim travellers to visit when travelling to Spain.
The Granada Airport is a small airport is located towards the west of Granada - about 12 kilometres and a 30 minute drive away - serving a limited number of flights. Travellers also have the option of flying via airports in Malaga, which are better at dealing with budget airlines.
Granada is an inexpensive destination for dining and eating out, giving travellers an exciting range of options to choose from. Tapas, Spanish omelettes, Pollo con Tomate and Migas Alpujarreñas are amongst dishes that are a must-try. For Halal food, a number of Moroccan restaurants are available and finding a Halal restaurant in Granada that serves such food will not be difficult.
The main mosque in the city is the Great Masjid of Granada. Located in the heart of Alhambra, the mosque was established in 2003 and serves the sizable Muslim population that has been in Granada for hundreds of years.
