The city of Puebla - officially known as Puebla de los Ángeles - is the fourth largest city in Mexico and is located southeast of the capital city of Mexico City, about 70 miles away. The city covers an area of over 500 square kilometres and is home to a population of over 2 million residents, including a large number of students from across the country. It is considered to be one of the most important colonial cities in Mexico and is a popular tourist destination in the country.
The history of Puebla dates back to 1531 when it was founded by the name of "La Puebla de los Ángeles" and the city also played an important role during the Mexican War for Independence. It presently features a range of architectural styles such as Renaissance to Mexican Baroque elements, thereby earning itself the status of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Pueblo offers an abundance of sites, including numerous cultural places-of-interest such as the Zocalo - the cultural, political and religious center of the city. Other attractions include the El Parian arts and crafts market, Palafoxiana Library, the noble house of Casa del Deán, Centro Cultural Santa Rosa, Museum of the Revolution, Fort Loreto and Fort Guadalupe, Gallery of Contemporary Art and Design and José Mariano Bello y Acedo Museum.
Hermanos Serdán International Airport is the main airport serving the city of Puebla and is located about 30 kilometres away from the city. It is a major airport in the country and serves numerous airlines and millions of passengers throughout the year.
Though there aren't any prominent Halal restaurants in Puebla, the Centro Islamico Al Kareem or the Al Islam Information Center in Puebla will be able to provide more information on the availability of Halal food in Puebla. Muslim travellers should note that though vegetarian cuisine is available at restaurants, most dishes require the use of animal fat and it is recommended that you talk with restaurant owners about the preparation of food prior to dining.
