A visit to Bilbao is not complete without a trip to the medieval neighborhood of Casco Viejo, or Las Siete Calles; translating to Old Town or Seven Streets respectively. It is also known as Las Siete Calles since these were the seven streets that formed the original Old Town and date back to the 1400s. Until the end of the 19th century, Casco Viejo was the walled part of the town. Casco Viejo is still the heart of the city and is incredibly lively, with its charming streets and numerous restaurants and quirky shops. The narrow streets found here are mostly pedestrian-only, which makes it easy to explore the colorful area. While in Casco Viejo, visitors will come across the Plaza Nueva, the Basque Museum, Mercado de la Ribera, the Bidebarrieta Municipal Library and numerous other attractions. The Mercado de la Ribera is known to be the biggest covered market in Europe and is the ideal spot for foodies. On Sundays, the Plaza Nueva hosts a flea market where visitors will find a plethora of odds and ends. Also on Sundays, at the nearby Plaza del Arenal, is a wonderful flower market.
