When in Toulouse, tourists must make it a point to visit the 19th century Place du Capitole, a busy square in the centre of the city. Toulouse is popularly known as ‘La Ville Rose’ or the ‘Rose City’ because of its charming brick buildings that glow pink. While Place du Capitole is known for being a gathering spot, it is also known popularly for housing the Baroque-style Le Capitole; which is a 18th century Town Hall. The historic Town Hall was formerly a Grand Palace and is now one of Toulouse’s major landmarks. Here visitors will find the Theatre National, a beautiful Baroque hall and walls and ceilings adorned with stunning paintings and frescoes from the 19th and 20th century. As mentioned above, La Place du Capitole is a popular meeting place for the locals of the city, and is the perfect place to people watch; therefore making it a favorite among tourists as well. There are also numerous quaint boutiques and shops here, along with lively cafés which are worthy of a visit. For those interested, there is an open-air market on Wednesdays from morning until evening. Visitors will also be able to find organic and naturally cultivated produce at the markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
