Mount Lavinia Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Sri Lanka and is perhaps the most prominent beach in the Colombo district. The beach is located just 8 miles away from the heart of Colombo and is in close proximity to many other attractions, making is a convenient sight-seeing spot. The beautiful beach provides some of the best views of the sunset in the area and it is visited by numerous locals and tourists in the evening. Due to the area's popularity as a tourist spot, many eateries and hotels will be available in the vicinity, as well as a wealth of shopping opportunities. Water sports are also available at the beach and it is also one of the country's main sea-bathing spots. Swimming in the sea is possible at certain times of the year and wading in the water – with the sea level up to your hips – is possible at all times.
