The Galle Face Green - commonly known as simply 'Galle Face' in short - is an excellent place in Colombo to unwind and spend a few leisurely hours by the side of the beach. The esplanade stretches on for about half a kilometre along the coast and is a popular spot amongst locals to play a game of cricket, fly kites in the evening or to just enjoy a quiet stroll. Plenty of food vendors will be found around the area selling food items ranging from ice cream to local seafood. It is located in close proximity to several of Sri Lanka's top luxury hotels and can be reached with a few minutes' walk. The area was established in 1856 by the Dutch in order to give their cannons a strategic line of fire against enemies and is presently being maintained by the Urban Development Authority of Sri Lanka.
