The Canton Tower is located in the Haizhu District of Guangzhou and is also known as the Guangzhou Tower and the Guangzhou TV Astronomical and Sightseeing Tower. The tower stood as the tallest tower in the world between the years of 2009 to 2011 until the Tokyo Skytree was built and it is presently the world's fifth-tallest freestanding structure. Soaring nearly 2,000 feet into the skies, the tower was completed in 2010 after five years of construction and features 37 floors and 9 lifts and elevators. The tower is also noted for its unique architectural design elements and at night it creates a truly breathtaking sight when the whole tower glows and emits light against the night sky. The Canton Tower is a prominent landmark in the city as well as a popular tourist attraction and it is located in close proximity to several other sites, parks and shopping boutiques.
