Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden is the most impressive garden in Brazil with approximately 8000 garden species, which includes precious endangered species. This is located at the JardimBotanico district in the South zone, in Rio de Janeiro. The garden is quiet during weekdaysbut the crowd blossoms during the weekends. At the entrance one walks down the Avenue of Royal Palms lined with giant palm trees that take you into the garden. Theserows of palms were planted during the opening of the garden and it is one of the major highlights.There are many greenhouses hiding beneath this Botanical Garden. It also consists of many monuments with historical and archeological value. The Amazonas section has a lake containing the enormous VitóriaRégia water lilies and the enclosed orquidário, where there are over 600 species of orchids. There is a kid’s playground in the botanical garden and a few snack bars on the ground. There is also a café at the main entrance of the garden. In addition to this the visitor’s Centre shows movies related to the history of the gardens which is played in English and Portuguese. There is a souvenir shop for visitors interested in recollecting their memories, which include shirts made of bamboo. This garden consists of a library and a research Centre specializing in botany with over 32,000 volumes.
