Just a few kilometres from the town of Sligo is the largest and one of the most important megalithic sites in Europe, the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery. Comprising of over 60 graves, with a combination of passage graves and dolmens, and the oldest pre-dating Newgrange by 700 years, this graveyard is an absolute must-visit when in Sligo. The terrain is however quite uneven and the attraction is thus best avoided by those with disabilities. There are guided tours for those who wish to learn more about the cemetery and the origins of the Irish, and a restored cottage with an exhibition relating to the site.
