The magnificent Kilkenny Castle is one of the top attractions in the city of Kilkenny. Located on elevated ground, overlooking Kilkenny city, next to the River Nore, this 12th century castle was occupied by the Earl of Pembroke William Marshall as well as the Earls of Ormonde. Today, this wonderfully restored castle features numerous rooms of interest, an art gallery, a kid’s play area and a café, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. It is also known for the variety of architectural styles used in its exterior and interior which resulted from its development over several years. Visitors will be able to tour the castle’s medieval room, its entrance corridor, the undercroft, its dining room, the kitchen, the state bedrooms, the courtyard and the gardens. The 21 hectare gardens consist of a colorful rose garden, a lake and extensive woodland featuring paths, making it easy to explore. The Butler Art Gallery which now occupies the suite of former servants is also a must-visit.

Muslim tourists will not find any prayer rooms within Kilkenny Castle, but they will be able to locate a secluded area in the castle’s garden to offer their prayers. Muslims visiting the attraction could also make use of the facilities offered at Kilkenny’s only known mosque - the Kilkenny Islamic Centre.
As mentioned above, Kilkenny Castle does house a café, which is said to be open only during the summer. While visitors will be able to find a variety of delicious food here, Muslim tourists will have to dine on suitable seafood and vegetarian dishes since non-Halal ingredients are sure to be widely used. Also, due to the sizeable population of Muslims in the city, there are a few Halal restaurants.
