A trip to Berlin is not complete without a visit to the iconic Berlin Wall. Built in 1961, by the German Democratic Republic, to separate East Berlin from the West, the Berlin Wall has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. Even though very little of the original wall remains, this famous Cold War relic is definitely worth a visit. A must-see is the East Side Gallery; a 1.3 kilometre long mural covered in over a hundred inspiring art works by commissioned artists. Located near the Bornholmer Straße S-Bahn station is the remaining section of the original Berlin Wall. This graffiti-free stretch has been preserved by the authorities and is another must-see. Tourists could also pay a visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial and the visitor center for more information about the Wall and for a look at how people lived on either side of the border. Also available for those interested in finding out more and tracking the path of the Wall that separated West Berlin from the East, is the Mauerguide, which is a PDA system with GPS tracking and audio/video presentations.
